The Truth About Celia

Apparently I'm not allowed to take my cat on the plane to Boston without a certificate of acclimation that says he won't die because the temperature is below 45 here. My long-haired outdoor cat. The cat I will have to furminate before I feel comfortable having him on the plane without fearing he will overheat. Okay, I lie. I'm never going to feel comfortable having him on the plane. I don't even know if he can go on it at all, but beyond that issue is the fact that I'm not even sure he's ever gone anywhere in a crate before--the vet is all of like, a mile from my mom's house, half the time we just dump the cats in the car and drive over (One cat used to travel in a cloth laundry bag--the lack of seeing where he was made him calm down.) And if he's going to be a pain to travel with, I'd rather he was a pain with me and my family/friends/whoever than with the whole plane/airport. But no one is coming back up here again until like, June. And they didn't bring him up when they came this year, so as I told my mom, i don't trust it to happen after I've left. He travels with me one way or another.

(It should be noted that while I talk about my pets everything we do with them is completely normal--and while I know that my pets are happy and healthy and all that--I do totally expect that there are other people who recoil in horror. They do WHAT? Her mother leaves the little dogs out ALL DAY? They buy the cheapest cat food so the cats stop eating it like it's going out of style? We grew up in farm country where pets ultimately are just another animal, and I think it makes our approach to their lifestyle more matter of fact than others may be. I promise you, we treat kids the same way!)

He also needs to go to the vet before flying as well so he has certification of health. I also want to get him microchipped, but I haven't like, checked to see if they actually do that. My mom is going to see about making an appointment for while I'm home.

Last night, while 'helping' Amanda come up with her series title, I decided that what needs to be written is a Yellowdog story of valor. I'm calling it Yellowdog in the Cold Kingdom, and it's the story of a brave brownish dog who gets kicked out of his warm house (with a sheepskin!) by his wicked stepmother because he whined under his breath for an hour solid (she couldn't have been his real mother. His real mother would never do that to him). So instead, he goes down under the porch, and ends up going through a door into another world, where a skunk takes him to his little snow bound cottage and they have hot...carob and turkish delight. And then a polar bear comes along and tells him he's the chosen one, fated to save them all from global warming. And he says "I always knew I was something special." And he goes to the polar bear kingdom and saves the world (just by being--he doesn't have to do anything, he just *is* that special), and in return they let him sleep on their warm fuzzy backs. And he never has to go back to his stupid stepmother's stupid sheepskin.

The End.

I'm torn between "Yellowdog in the Cold Kingdoms" and "Best Day Ever" as titles. ("The polar bear, the witch, and the porch steps" isn't catchy enough).

So, a giftcard from Amazon came from a friend, and my first thought was 'drat! they beat me to it' (It's okay. I've got a new plan. But seriously, there's going to be some sort of an amazon card arms race if this keeps up. I'll be sending cards Jan 1 for the next Xmas.) But not 10 minutes later I found a new love (Patrick Park) and was trying to decide if I could really justify buying one or more new albums IMMEDIATELY or if I'd have to wait until at least after I come up with something for my mom (I KNOW! I'm a horrible daughter. Particularly since I've been trying to convince myself to talk her into replacing the lining of the wool coat, preferably with one containing thinsulate.) But look! No guilt! I can go home today, and give amazon $18 of someone else's money to make my day happier. (Happiness is ALWAYS a new CD. except for the last Keane one.)

If we acknowledge the fact that I am ABYSMALLY bad at noticing when guys like me or are flirting with me--if we take that as a fact, and then we encounter a situation where I actually do feel like a guy is flirting with me, what does that mean? Does it mean I'm more or less likely to be right? Please show your work.

this is what happens when you stay up late to google someone you'd forgotten about. New Andy Yorke! I am SO EXCITED. I am like, DRAGONCON levels of excited.

For those who have never paid attention to my music lusts, this is the main singer from Unbeliveable Truth, a band which wrote songs I have written numerous stories about (Nightlight, The Building, and several more that I've not quite figured out enough about in my head.) I own every bit of Unbelievable Truth that I've been able to get my hands on, and share it out with everyone because it's a) amazing and b) no longer available. Andy is Thom Yorke's younger brother, and has as nearly as amazing a voice (though *differently* amazing) and as good if not better song writing skills.

So that's an amazing music night. The only one I can think of that was better was when I discovered the two Unbelievable Truth albums not available in the US. (Only Almost Here was released here. I bought it in college at a Best Buy in Kalamazoo, on impulse, and LOVED it.)

Plus I love this song, which is not him, but still make me happy, and made me go buy it from Amazon..

So, I realized a few months ago that the reason my computer won't handle video correctly probably traces back to the bad windows install that it's running. (which is why it took over two weeks of daily emails with tech support to get my Zune to communicate with it as well.) Specifically, it appears that when it installed the WMP stuff, it totally messed them up, to the point that I can't run DVDs on the computer except through other programs (no auto play, basically, I have to start up VLC to watch them. Which is fine, but I shouldn't have to.). And I suspect this may also be why I CANNOT get the video conversion programs to work at all. I really don't want to reinstall windows (particularly since I've temporarily misplaced my backup drive--I suspect I was trying to reanimate the laptop again.) So once I'm back on the webs, I may see about completely uninstalling WMP, right down to all the hidden/shared files, and see if the reinstall cleans up some things. Eventually I'll probably just give up and reinstall windows.

I may have fallen in love with the new dell ultramobile, which isn't even out for at least a few weeks, possibly ages and ages. Do I need it? No. Has that argument ever worked with me? Also no. It's so tiny and cute and most importantly, cheap. Since I've killed my last two laptops in less than 2 years each, cheap is important. And Tiny! My brother's MSI Wind is apparently 2.3 pounds, and this is even smaller. It's not just an ultramobile, it's very nearly a pocketbook! It is alas, linux. But better that than vista. I would cope. (I would prefer XP, but needs must.)

Ooh, new CD from the Avett Brothers out. I will now need to walk to Borders today.

so, there's a really bad line of erotica novels out there, involving animal-human hybrids. We all know what the most distinctive feature of cat penises is, right? Here, have a wikipedia link for reference. Who, upon reading that, thought, 'man, that's hot'? In a related note, Andrea has decided that maybe she wouldn't be able to proofread romance novels, and definitely not animal-hybrid dominance porn. I don't know why. She's such a wimp. (There is in fact a wait list at paperbackswap, which is probably the scariest thing about the book. Well, after the blowjob scene, anyway. )

Second round of transitional employees leave the company next Thursday. This means many of the editors. So sad. I hate this company right now. Everything's falling apart, and no one's telling us anything.

So, the 6 boxes that went home with me have become 3 empty boxes and three boxes--one of CDs, which will go right to the basement, I suspect, one of books to be read, and one (partially) of cookbooks. Today, I think, there will be rearranging of the books to be read box, making space for more, and then another box will be started. (I'm totally hoping I can keep it to just two boxes. PLEASE. But I still have the bed-side books to pack, as well as a couple of handsfull of books elsewhere in the room that I haven't found yet. Also: Thus far, no giant bug.

After this, I think I've remembered another box or so of books that is currently in a bag I don't like, so they'll have to get transfered over, and the bag tossed. (these are mostly expendable books, which may just get ditched at the library, or similar, but for now, they're getting organized uniformly at least, and listed on bookmooch or paperbackswap.) And that should take most of my mess down to reasonable levels (seriously, there's like no floor space in the room, so the fact that there was about 25 books to be read on the floor made it an appalling mess, but once they were up, it's like 900% better.)

Also, walking home with 6 boxes: evil. Though lots of people did ask if I needed help, I didn't really think they meant it. It's still nice that they were polite.

Also, also, the new Old 97's (Blame it on Gravity) is FABULOUS. It's like, I think it may even be better than Fight Songs and To Far to Care. This review seems to be right thus far, given that a) I don't own "Hitchhike to Rhome" and b) I've only had the CD for less than 24 hours so there's a limit to how much I've listened to it. That said, I ADORE it, and it makes up for Rhett's last single album, which is itself only forgivable for about three good songs, namely Meteor Shower, Fireflies, and Singular Girl. (of course, he's also forgiven because "Our Love" is the finest song EVER.) Anyways, I haven't heard a song I didn't like at first listen, thus far, though it still remains for the favorites to sort themselves out.

And for those of you who missed it, the Nada Surf album Lucky is GOLD and you all should also own it. Trust me on this. You know I'm good for it.

Incidentally, I've decided that the worst thought ever for a fairy tale remake/mashup is "The Frog Prince and Metamorphosis." I think I'm going to need someone else to prove this through writing it. I'm looking at you, mr "5 hours of doing nothing at work gives me plenty of time to read Jules Verne".

A rhetorical question:
okay, let's say I have an amazon gift card at home, and an amazon order ready to go at the moment. Do I a) wait until home to add the card and submit the order or b) admit that my spending pattern suggests I will order from amazon again in the near future and just pay for the damn things myself and save the card for later?

Yeah, I went with option B. Three more CDs (Nada Surf, Jack Johnson, and Dan Wilson), and Hot Shots Part 1 and 2. (I nearly caved and bought the Naked Gun threepack as well, but managed to resist so far.).

I would like a Ravelry for needlework. Someone needs to hop to it, or I'll have to do it myself. (seriously, I WANT.)

There is various possibly good stuff happening jobwise--mostly just interviews and phone interviews. But still, more than I've had in a while.

So, remember how I was claiming that the Doug Burr on my Sampler was the best song ever? You might have missed it, because it could possibly have been while I was walking home today. Anyways, I was bemoaning the lack of downloadable songs of his online, but look what I found today! 5 songs! My current favorite is #4, Thing about Trouble, but then again, that's the only one I've heard so far.

Now, to see if the Main Drag "Love in Wartime" is up anywhere...

The next time someone asks me for a date, they had better be a cute boy talking about dinner and a movie, or there *will* be a hostile working environment.

I got my first issue of Paste last week, and spent some of my miserableness time reading it, and putting the sampler on my Zune. Mmm. Good songs:
The Sundogs: Desperation and Borrowed Time. (myspace)
The Main Drag: Love in Wartime (myspace)
Rooney: When Did Your Heart Go Missing?
Doug Burr: Thing about Trouble(myspace)

(really, the saddest thing about new music is that I can only point you to icky Myspace pages instead of useful youtube clips.)

Also, I went to the CD store today and came home poorer, but also richer in music.

Also, I was reminded of the existance of this song, Six O'Clock News, so I may give in and buy it. It's really pretty, after all, and sad.

I've had this album--Athlete's new one, "Beyond the Neighbourhood" since Sunday when I went a little crazy with the buying, and even though I think I've heard it upwards of 20 or 30 times since then, today I suddenly actually listened to the lyrics to one of the songs and was like, "oh my god, how did I miss this before?" I'd been in love with Hurricane and The Outsiders (with the line "I'm away with the Fairies now" in a song about being english.), and I'd totally overlooked "Flying Over Bus Stops". Seriously, this song is so perfect with the telling details:

I belong with your arm wrapped around my neck.
Your lips glistening in the light of some headlights passing by.

The first line, I like, because it's just a generic lovesong image, and then *pow* totally changed by the second line.

So, I think i have to go buy Seasons 1 and 2 of Veronica Mars, since borders has them for $20 apiece today. Also, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and maybe Hot Fuzz. All for me, of course.

Also, I may actually go to a concert this weekend--Sondre Lerche and Dan Wilson are playing in town on Sunday. It would be worth it, it would SO be worth it.

Also, the Zune is still hated by my computer. Stupid User Mode Driver Framework! Behave!
